Work packages
INLAND is organised into seven work packages. The first four cover the centre’s main research activities, while the remaining work packages focus on education, communication and coordination.
WP1: Drivers, Alternative Pathways and Scenarios
This work package investigates the drivers of change in Norwegian land use and nature management. It will develop alternative pathways and future scenarios to assess how different societal developments, priorities and policy choices may shape future land use and nature management.
Scenarioene skal blant annet belyse mulige konflikter og synergier mellom jordbruk, skogbruk, fornybar energi og andre arealinteresser.
Lead: Sebastian Peters, NMBU
Co-lead: Eva Skarbøvik, NIBIO
WP2: Pressures, Environmental State and Impacts
This work package examines how different forms of land use and nature management affect ecosystems, biodiversity and ecosystem services. It investigates the pressures acting on the environment, their impacts on ecological condition, and the consequences for nature and society.
Drawing on monitoring data, remote sensing and ecological modelling, researchers will assess the current state of the environment and explore how it may evolve under different future scenarios. The work will improve our understanding of both individual pressures and their cumulative effects on biodiversity, ecosystems and ecosystem services.
Lead: Anders Nielsen, NIBIO
Co-lead: Katrine Eldegard, NMBU
WP3: Governance and Policy Instruments
This work package examines whether existing governance systems and policy instruments are effective in achieving national and international goals for sustainable land use and nature management.
Researchers will analyse policy objectives, legal frameworks, economic instruments and governance arrangements. They will also investigate conflicts of interest and the political and institutional barriers that can impede the achievement of sustainability goals. The work will focus in particular on climate and environmental policy, agriculture, forestry, reindeer husbandry and renewable energy.
Lead: Lars H. Gulbrandsen, FNI
Co-lead: Gunnhild Storbekkrønning Solli, NMBU
WP4: Solutions for Sustainable Development and Transformative Change
In this work package, researchers and stakeholder partners will work together to develop, test and evaluate innovative solutions for sustainable land use and nature management.
The work focuses on solutions that can reduce overall land-use pressure, support the sustainable use of natural resources, and strengthen nature conservation and restoration efforts. These may include legal and economic instruments, planning and governance tools, innovative forms of collaboration, and digital decision-support systems.
The solutions will be developed in collaboration with municipalities, public authorities, businesses and organisations, and will be tested through the Centre’s user cases and living labs.
Lead: Katrine Broch Hauge, UiO
Co-lead: Jostein Frydenlund, NIBIO
WP5: Education
This work package coordinates the Centre’s educational activities. Knowledge generated through INLAND will be integrated into bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes, as well as continuing professional development and lifelong learning courses.
The Centre will also contribute to training the next generation of experts equipped to work across disciplines and sectors and tackle complex challenges related to land use and nature management.
Lead: Per Kr. Rørstad, NMBU
WP6: Communication
This work package coordinates the Centre’s communication, dissemination and exploitation activities, ensuring that knowledge and results generated by INLAND reach relevant audiences and are put into practical use.
INLAND will ensure that its research is accessible and relevant to public authorities, businesses, organisations, research communities, the education sector and the wider public. Results will be shared through the Centre’s website, news articles, events, policy briefs, scientific publications, and other relevant channels and forums.
Lead: Kathrine Torday Gulden, NIBIO
WP7: Coordination
This work package provides the overall leadership and coordination of INLAND. It is responsible for administration, financial management and data governance, and supports collaboration with other research centres as well as national and international partners.
Lead: Gunnhild Søgaard, NIBIO
Co-lead: Øystein Aas, NMBU
